1. How does a search engine work?

All search engines work in the same way. This consists of three major steps:

(a) Web Crawling – It searches the websites and select pieces of information. Web crawler or a spider is the part of the search engine software which Crawls or jumps from one web page to the other following all the links. This process is called web crawling and is done on regular basis to have updated information.

(b) Creating an index – In the second step, an index of the data and their location is created. Everything that the spider finds, will be stored in the second part called the index.

(c) Search for Keywords – Search engine software searches the database to find matches with the entered keyword. Once it finds the match it will display them to the users according to their relevance.

2. Write the steps to upload and download a file from the Internet.

We can download the files from Internet by two ways.

Downloading files through browser.

  • Open the website from where you want to download something.
  • Select the file you want to download and right click on it. Now select the “Save Target As…” option from the shortcut menu. The save as dialogue box appears.
  • Specify the location and click the save button. To download the file to your hard disk.

Downloading files through FTP.

  • Click on Start – All programs – FileZilla FTP Client – FileZilla. The FileZilla window opens.
  • Log onto the server with the help of FileZilla.
  • Select the folder or directory where you want to download the file.
  • Right click on the server directory and click the download option.

3. Write the steps to search information on the web using a search engine.

To search any information on the web, follow the given steps.

  • Open your browser.
  • Open the popular search engine, Google by typing www.google.co.in.
  • Type a keyword or your search term in the search box and press enter key.
  • Click on any of the link you think is most suited to your needs.
  • The relevant web page will be displayed.

4. Write a short notes on newsgroup.

A newsgroup is a collection of messages. Normally text posted by individuals to a new server maintained by Company, Group, or individual within the Usenet system. Each newsgroup is a platform for exchanging information on a particular subject. Here every user is a member, the members post (write) read and respond to messages. Most information posted to newsgroup are text based.

5. Explain Telnet with an example. When do you use it?

Telnet is a network protocol that allows a user on one computer to login into another computer that is part of the same network. A Telnet program allows a user at a terminal or PC to login to a remote computer and run a program and execute other Unix or Windows command. It was originally developed for ARPANET.

6. What are the minimum requirements for video conferencing?

The main component here is the computer system. The other components required for a video conferencing system include.
  • Video input: video camera or webcam.
  • Video output: computer monitor, television or projector.
  • Audio input: Microphones.
  • Audio output: Headphones or speaker.
  • Data transfer: analogue or digital telephone network. LAN or Internet.
  • Software: Software like Skype, Microsoft Office Live meeting, Google meet etc.

7.  Give one advantage of Electronic Mail over ordinary mailing method.

Emails are inexpensive and fast, in compared to the traditional method of sending mails. Also, we can get the immediate feedback of that Mail, and record of the mails are maintained in the same place.

8. What is HTTP? Explain its usage.

HTTP stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol. It is a communication protocol which is used to transmit HTML documents on the worldwide web from the web server to the web browser. Its primary function is to establish a connection with the server and sends HTML pages back to the user’s browser.

1. Explain the components of an email message.

The components of an email messages are as follows:

  • TO: In this area you have to write the recipient email address where you want to send the Mail. This area also contains two components CC and BCC. CC stands for carbon copy. This is a way of sending the same email to multiple email ID simultaneously. BCC stands for Blind Carbon copy. This is a method of sending an email to multiple email ID without letting the recipients know about the other recipients.

  • Subject area: In this area you have to write the title of the mail.

  • E-mail body: It is the white area where you will type your message.

  • Send Button: Click on this button to send your mail to the recipient email address.

2. Give at least two difference between email and video conferencing.

Email refers to electronic mail. It is a method of sending and receiving messages through computers and the Internet. It is one of the most widely used Internet services. You can also send documents or files through email. Video conferencing is the process where two or more people at different location participate in conference by using computer networks to transmit the audio and video data among each other. In email, no extra hardware is required, but in video conferencing you have to use video input and output device for viewing the video of the person and audio input and output device for listening and recording the voice.

3. Explain how FTP works. Also mention the basic advantages of using FTP.

FTP is based on client server architecture. FTP Client is a computer that runs FTP client software and FTP server computer runs FTP server software. Firstly, client user authenticate themselves by providing their username and password. Then request for the appropriate file from the server. The FTP server check the authentication and then the transfer of files take place between a FTP server and a FTP client.

Advantages of FTP:

  • Users can get new software as well as audio and video files.

  • There is no problem with different systems running on different operating systems while using FTP.

  • Size of the file is not a limitation, unlike emails. 

4.  What do you mean by bloggings? Explain the basic advantages of writing blog.

The term blog is derived from the term web blog. A blog is a type of website usually maintained by an individual. It contains regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or some other material such as graphics or videos. The person who writes a blog is called a Blogger. 

Advantages of blogging: 

  • Blog allow you to share your ideas and views.

  • The cost of bogging is very low. It is one of the cheapest form of advertising.

  • Blogs also allow you to speak directly to your audience.

  • Block build the profile of the writer, showcasing his or her talent and expertise.
